Your verified address still decides the radius

Most plumbers hide the shop address and list the towns they cover. Google still measures distance from the address you verified, so a shop on the edge of its area usually ranks well on one side of town and fades on the other. A service-area list does not stretch that circle.

Burst pipes do not keep business hours

“Emergency plumber” and “plumber open now” come in at night and on weekends, and Google shows whether you are open at that moment. If your hours say closed at two in the morning, you lose the call even when someone would pick up. Run a real after-hours line? Then set the hours to match it.

Your Google category

Primary categoryPlumber

Often added
  • Drainage service
  • Septic system service
  • Bathroom remodeler

“Plumber” as the primary category is almost always right. Add drainage or septic only if you own the equipment and take those jobs; a remodeling category pulls in project leads that take weeks to close, not same-day service calls.

Pick each name from Google’s list as you type; Google renames categories now and then.

  1. Search the emergency words on their own

Type “plumber” and then “emergency plumber”. The second list often comes back in a different order, because open hours start to count.

  2. Stand at the far end of your area

Drag the map to the town you drive farthest to and tap “Search this area”. That is where a shop-based radius shows its limits.

  3. Skip the paid boxes

Local Services Ads with the “Google Guaranteed” badge and “Sponsored” pins sit above the map list. They are bought, not earned, so count your place from the first unpaid result.

  • Town names packed into the business name

“Best Plumber Austin Round Rock” breaks Google’s naming rules. Competitors can suggest an edit, and repeated edits can get the profile suspended. Use the name on your trucks and invoices.

  • A second profile for every town

One business at one real address gets one profile. Extra listings at a virtual office or a relative’s house are against the guidelines and a common reason for suspensions in the trades.

StrideRank, every week

On a paid plan the grid runs every week for 3 keywords of your choice (10 on Pro), for example “emergency plumber” next to “plumber near me”, so you see whether a change moved you.

Why do I rank in my own town but not in the next one?

Distance from your verified address weighs heavily on Google Maps. Listing more towns in your service area does not change where that distance is measured from. What helps in the next town is proof that you work there: reviews from customers there, a page on your site for that town, and jobs you post about.

Is a Local Services Ads spot the same as ranking on Maps?

No. Local Services Ads are a paid product with their own box above the map. The free check reports your place in the regular map list, the one you earn with your profile, reviews and website.

Should my hours say 24 hours if I only answer the phone at night?

Only if you dispatch at night too. Google shows “Open 24 hours” to people with a flooded basement; if they reach voicemail, the review that follows hurts more than the missing badge.

Which Google category should a plumber pick?

“Plumber” as the primary category. Add secondary categories such as “Drainage service” only for work you really take on. Pick each name from Google’s list as you type, because Google renames categories from time to time.
