Google Maps rank check for landscapers

Mowing clients and design-build clients search differently, and Google sends each to a different list. See where your landscaping business ranks for “lawn care” and “landscaping” in your town.

  • What your profile lacks

Route density for mowing, reach for projects

Weekly lawn care only pays when stops sit close together, so the map in your core neighborhoods matters most. Design and hardscape clients will wait and compare portfolios, and they will hire from farther away. Check both, from different places.

The spring rush and the fall cleanup

“Lawn care near me” and “yard cleanup” surge when the grass starts growing, then again when the leaves drop. Calendars fill within weeks, so the businesses that rank in March get the season. Fixing the profile in May is late.

Your Google category

Primary categoryLandscaper

Often added
  • Lawn care service
  • Landscape designer
  • Lawn sprinkler system contractor
  • Tree service

Your primary category steers which searches you show up for. “Landscaper” brings project work, “Lawn care service” brings weekly mowing. Choose the one you want more of and add the other as a secondary.

Pick each name from Google’s list as you type; Google renames categories now and then.

  1. Separate mowing and design

Search “lawn care service” and “landscape design” as two checks. Most companies do well in one and are invisible in the other.

  2. Check in late winter

Measure before the spring rush. If you are missing, you still have time to add photos, services and reviews.

  3. Start where your best jobs are

Move the map to the neighborhoods where your best-paying work has come from and check there first.

  • A primary category for the wrong job

If you want patios and plantings but your primary category is “Lawn care service”, Google keeps matching you to mowing searches. The primary category is the strongest signal you set yourself.

  • No photos of finished work

Landscaping sells with pictures. A profile without project photos loses the click to one with them, even at the same rank.

Free, once

It searches Google Maps for “landscaping [your town]”, with the town taken from your website, and shows your place in that list.

  • The landscapers above you, with stars, reviews and distance
  • Your profile next to theirs, category “Landscaper” first
  • A 5 × 5 grid from the report email

StrideRank, every week

On a paid plan the grid runs every week for 3 keywords of your choice (10 on Pro), for example “lawn care service” next to “landscaping near me”, so you see whether a change moved you.

Landscaper or Lawn care service as my primary category?

Pick the work you want more of. “Landscaper” fits design and installation; “Lawn care service” fits recurring maintenance. Add the other one as a secondary category.

Should I mark my business closed in winter?

Not if you still answer quotes or plow snow. Keep the profile open, adjust the hours and post what you do in the off-season. A closed profile in February is easy to pass over in March.

Why do I rank in one suburb and not the next?

Google measures how far each searcher is from the address you verified. In the next suburb, proof helps: reviews from clients there, photos of jobs there and a page on your site that names the area.
