Google Maps rank check for dentists
Most patients pick a dentist within a short drive of home or work, and they pick from the map. See where your practice ranks for “dentist” and “emergency dentist” in your area.

How dentists get picked on Google Maps
A short drive, and the right insurance
Patients choose within a small radius, often near work for lunchtime cleanings. On top of distance, they filter by insurance and by reviews. Your practice profile also shares the map with profiles of your own dentists, which can split the clicks.
A toothache on the weekend
“Emergency dentist” and “dentist open now” come in on evenings and weekends, from people in pain who will drive farther than usual. If you hold emergency slots, mention them in the profile description and on your site, and keep the hours exact.
Primary categoryDentist
- Cosmetic dentist
- Emergency dental service
- Pediatric dentist
- Dental implants periodontist
General practices lead with “Dentist”. Add cosmetic or emergency categories only if you offer that care on a regular basis. Specialist categories belong to practices with a specialist on staff.
Pick each name from Google’s list as you type; Google renames categories now and then.
How dentists check their rank by hand
Private window, set location, no ads counted: the basic method.
Check on a Saturday
Search “emergency dentist” and “dentist open saturday” on the weekend, when open hours change the list.
Look for your own dentists
See whether profiles of dentists in your practice show up next to the practice. Each one should be claimed and correct.
Check near offices
Move the map to the office areas near you. Patients who come at lunch search from there.
What costs dentists their spot
Dentist profiles nobody claimed
Google sometimes creates profiles for individual dentists. Unclaimed ones can show wrong hours or a dentist who has left. Claim them, and for someone who left, ask Google to update or mark the profile.
A specialty you do not offer
Choosing “Orthodontist” or “Periodontist” without a specialist on staff can mislead patients and draw edits. Keep the categories to the care you provide.
What the free check shows you
Free, once
For dentists it reads the category on your Google Business Profile (usually “Dentist”) and searches that around your listing. No profile found means “not checked”, never a guess.
- The dentists above you, with stars, reviews and distance
- Your profile next to theirs, category “Dentist” first
- A 5 × 5 grid from the report email
StrideRank, every week
On a paid plan the grid runs every week for 3 keywords of your choice (10 on Pro), for example “emergency dentist” next to “dentist near me”, so you see whether a change moved you.

hello@striderank.comShould each dentist in our practice have a Google profile?
They can: individual dentists may hold a listing of their own. That widens your presence on the map but also divides reviews. Claim the ones that exist and keep them accurate; create new ones only for dentists patients ask for by name.
Does “Emergency dental service” as a category help?
It can, if you really take emergency patients. It matches urgent searches; listing it without the slots behind it brings calls you cannot take.
Why do I rank in the morning but not at night?
For some searches Google favors places that are open at that moment. When you close, open competitors move up. That is normal and a reason to check at the times your patients search.
