Tight routes beat a wide map

Cleaning pays when the homes on your schedule sit close together. You do not need to rank across the whole metro area, only in the neighborhoods your teams already drive through. Measure there first. Residential and office searches are also separate lists with different competitors.

Move-out deadlines

“Move out cleaning” peaks at the end of the month, when tenants need a deposit back and landlords need the unit ready. These are rushed, often one-time jobs, and they are a good way in: many end with a regular client or a landlord who calls again.

Your Google category

Primary categoryHouse cleaning service

Often added
  • Commercial cleaning service
  • Janitorial service
  • Carpet cleaning service

Decide what you want more of. Homes: “House cleaning service” first. Offices and buildings: “Commercial cleaning service” or “Janitorial service” first. The other side can follow as a secondary, but Google weighs the primary most.

Pick each name from Google’s list as you type; Google renames categories now and then.

  1. Try every word customers use

“House cleaning”, “maid service” and “cleaning lady” can return three different lists. Note your place in each one.

  2. Check offices separately

If you clean commercial space, search “office cleaning” from the business district, not from a residential street.

  3. Measure along your best routes

Pan over to the blocks where you already have clients. A new client there is worth more than one across town.

  • A home address on the map

Many cleaning companies run from home. If clients never come to you, hide the address and set a service area. Showing a home address is a privacy risk, and the guidelines ask service-area businesses to hide it.

  • Reviews that never name the job

“Great job!” tells the next client little. Ask clients to say what you did, such as a deep clean, a move-out or a weekly visit. Google often quotes those words in the results.

Free, once

It searches Google Maps for “cleaning service [your town]”, with the town taken from your website, and shows your place in that list.

  • The cleaning companies above you, with stars, reviews and distance
  • Your profile next to theirs, category “House cleaning service” first
  • A 5 × 5 grid from the report email

StrideRank, every week

On a paid plan the grid runs every week for 3 keywords of your choice (10 on Pro), for example “maid service [city]” next to “house cleaning near me”, so you see whether a change moved you.

Should a cleaning company show its address on Google Maps?

Only if clients come to that address. Most cleaning businesses travel to the client, so the address should be hidden and a service area set instead. You can still rank on the map that way.

House cleaning service or Janitorial service?

Choose the primary category for the clients you want more of. Homes match “House cleaning service”; offices and buildings match “Commercial cleaning service” or “Janitorial service”.

Why do I rank for “house cleaning” but not for “maid service”?

Google treats them as related but not identical searches. Use both phrases where they fit naturally: in your services list, on your site and in how you describe the work. Reviews that use the words help as well.
