Customers drive the damaged car to you

Your shop is a storefront on the map: people bring the car in, so the address and the pin are part of the ranking. Drivers often search near work or along their commute, not from home. A shop on a main road can rank across a wide area, and one tucked into an industrial park needs a pin that points at the right door.

Right after the accident

“Collision repair near me” is often typed minutes after a crash, sometimes while waiting for the tow truck. Open hours, a phone that is answered and clear words about working with insurance decide who gets that car.

Your Google category

Primary categoryAuto body shop

Often added
  • Auto dent removal service
  • Auto painting
  • Auto glass shop

“Auto body shop” matches both collision and body searches. Add dent removal or painting as secondaries when you offer them. Glass only fits if you replace windshields yourself.

Pick each name from Google’s list as you type; Google renames categories now and then.

  1. Search from the busy roads

Move the map to the main intersections near you, where accidents happen, and check “collision repair” there.

  2. Check body, collision and dent words

“Auto body shop”, “collision repair” and “dent repair” can each show a different top three. Check all three.

  3. Watch hail season

After hail, mobile dent techs open profiles nearby. Note who joins the list and who is still there a month later.

  • The pin on the wrong building

In industrial parks the map pin often lands on the neighbor or the middle of the lot. Move it to your entrance, so drivers do not give up at the gate.

  • Insurer names in the business name

An insurer’s name or “approved” wording after your shop name is against Google’s rules for names. List insurer programs on your site instead.

Free, once

For auto body shops it reads the category on your Google Business Profile (usually “Auto body shop”) and searches that around your listing. No profile found means “not checked”, never a guess.

  • Your profile next to theirs, category “Auto body shop” first

StrideRank, every week

On a paid plan the grid runs every week for 3 keywords of your choice (10 on Pro), for example “collision repair [city]” next to “auto body shop near me”, so you see whether a change moved you.

Does being on an insurer’s repair program affect Google Maps?

Not that anyone has shown. Insurer referral programs and the map are separate channels. Many drivers still search on their own, so the map brings jobs that do not come through the insurer.

Why do mobile dent repair techs outrank my shop?

After hail, mobile techs often set up listings right next to the hit area, and for “dent repair” they can match well. For “collision repair” and “auto body shop”, a real shop with history and reviews tends to hold up better.

Should body work and mechanical repair have separate profiles?

Only if they are really separate businesses, with their own name and entrance. One business with both services gets one profile with both categories.
